Russ Connors recommends the Los Angeles Times series on American Values and the Next President http://www.latimes.com/news/opinion/web/la-op-values2008-home,1,3058580.htmlstory

Nine editorials aim to examine issues that will shape the 2008 presidential election by considering contemporary questions in the context of longstanding American principles.
The goal of each editorial was to explore the fundamental ideas of American society and to evaluate the candidates in terms of how they address and live up to, or fall short of, these founding notions.

The nine topics are:  A More Perfect union, Life, Liberty & Justice, Powers of the Earth, Common Defense, Pursuit of Happiness, Domestic Tranquility, General Welfare, & The Blessings of Liberty.  All the topics are drawn from the language of America’s founding documents, the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution.
