August Meeting Featured Jill Martinez

Speaking on “United Democrats Moving Forward,” Jill Martinez covered her viewpoints on everything from grassroots politics to the presidential campaigns.  With her extensive background and knowledge in housing, education, transportation and social justice issues, Jill has helped with the building of over 400 self-help housing in Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo Counties, but now finds it necessary to negotiate with other who are not in favor of this housing.  She stressed the importance of valuing the person across the table from you during negotiations, and children should be taught at a very young age the value of the other person.

Martinez said we also need to communicate to people that it is not OK that they are not involved, adding:  People need to get informed; We should have educational forums, with people of different opinions on subjects such as energy, environment, and immigration; and, Find out as much as you can about the difference in people, and develop a deeper appreciation of these.

Jill, who ran for the 24th Congressional District in 2006, shared her hopes for her own political future, and said she is again running for Congress in 2008.

July Program - Patricia Solorio of Future Leaders of America

The July program featured Future Leaders of America (FLA), a Latino youth leadership development program. Patricia Solorio, north county program director, brought with her two students, Sam Gonzales and Oscar Guiterrez, who spoke about their FLA experiences.

FLA was started in 1984 in Ventura County,  and in 1994 several Santa Maria community leaders, including Hilda Zacarias brought the program to our area.  Those of you who worked on the Zacarias campaign were introduced to some FLA’ers who, in their free time, participated in her campaign and were invaluable grassroots workers.

FLA is a program which does in admirable job with our Latino youth.  FLA was started when it was noticed no Latino Leaders were coming out of high school  and only one in 100 students were going on to college from high school.  So, a summer Leadership Program was started and now up to 100 students a summer go to camp to learn public speaking and self esteem, the tools they need in life.  After attending camp, some of the students later become “peer facilitators” at the camp and help other students.  Beyond leadership camp is family camp, where parents become involved and the entire family learns communications skills.

Here is the FLA mission statement: “In service to community, Future Leaders of America provides leadership training, educational experiences and promotes the personal development of Latino youth, for the purpose of fostering a greater awareness and participation in responsible leadership in a global and democratic society.”

June Program - Karin Quimby, Dialogue with Faith Leaders

Many Democrats have become deeply skeptical of the role of religion in American politics and called for the strict separation of church and state. Many have sought to banish religious discourse from the public square entirely.

However, the California Democratic Party Interfaith Outreach Program seeks to begin a conversation among Democratic Party activists and local faith communities about our common values.
Heading up this effort in Santa Barbara County and the surrounding area, is Karin Quimby.

Karin works for Congresswoman Lois Capps as her liaison to the faith communities and was our June speaker. Karin has a Ph.D., is a former university professor in film and literature and has worked on numerous social justice and political campaigns.
We wish to thank all who attended this excellent presentation.

May Meeting Featured Mary Jacka

For many years, Santa Marian Mary Jacka has been an activist working for the rights of low income residents, for working families and for social justice. Our guest speaker for May, Mary Jacka, continues to carry the banner in behalf of those who are often overlooked in our society. More than 20 years ago she advocated for the construction of Los Adobes de Maria, a low income housing project here in Santa Maria. She continues to urge elected officials to support affordable housing programs and has also become involved in pushing for affordable transportation for farm workers. Employed by California Rural Legal Assistance, Mary provided us with some background on CRLA, gave us a short bio and discussed what issues are of importance to her today.
