Mr. Allison is a Democratic candidate for the U. S. Congress from the 24th Congressional District, which covers most of Ventura and inland Santa Barbara Counties. Republican Elton Gallegly presently holds this seat. Marta Jorgenson, another Democrat running for this seat, spoke to us at our SMVDC meeting last November. Tim Allison is a successful businessman and community organizer and has lived in California for the past 13 years. He also has an extensive record of community involvement in local non-profits, community organizations and political campaigns, including serving as Coordinator for Barack Obama's Campaign in Santa Barbara County, California. Tim also served as an Obama delegate to the Democratic Convention in Denver, Colorado. Tim Allison is 42 and was born in Duluth, MN, the son of a welder and a special education teacher. He watched his parents balance raising five children while going back to school to receive advanced degrees. The hard work ethic was part of the lessons he learned early as he achieved the rank of Eagle Scout at just 14 years of age. He was a high school and college athlete, played the trumpet in a jazz band and was a National Junior Olympian in track. As the son of educators (his mom taught in elementary school and his dad taught at the community college and vocational tech levels), Tim often jokes that education was such a "given" that he was in law school before he realized that some of his friends were able to stop after high school. Tim graduated with honors in Economics from the University of Minnesota at Duluth, where he was the Outstanding Senior in Economics. He was the Student Body President and received the highest award given by the college. He went on to graduate from a top twenty law school and was elected to serve as a National Officer for the American Bar Association, Law Student Division. Tim Allison has been extensively involved in the community as a professional and in the non-profit arena. Some of his many accomplishments include: • Service as Executive Director of an Environmental Non-Profit. • Participation in Leadership Santa Barbara County. • Service on the Citizens Police Academy. • Service as a city council appointee to the Civil Service Commission. • Management of a successful effort to provide over $2 million per year in annual funding to clean up creek and ocean pollution. • Co-founding a coalition which led a 3 1/2 year effort to successfully pass a Living Wage Ordinance. • Management of the history-making campaign of the first African American ever elected to the Santa Barbara city council. • Service on the board of the Legal Aid Foundation. • Past Presidency of the Santa Barbara County League of Conservation Voters. • Service as an elected Statewide officer of the Environmental Caucus of the California Democratic Party. • Presidency of the Ventura County Small Business Coalition. • Served as a successful small businessman and real estate broker for the past six years. Tim Allison is married to Vickie Allison and has a six year old son, TJ. In his spare time, Tim has completed six marathons. Website: www.timallison.com |
